Independent driving takes to the road

There was a smooth start for the new independent driving section when it was introduced to all main categories of practical test on 4 October.

The changes received widespread media coverage, and there's been good feedback from candidates and industry representatives. "It's great to see that the changes have been welcomed by people in the industry" said chief driving examiner, Trevor Wedge. "We've also had a lot of good feedback from candidates."

Road safety organisations have reacted positively to independent driving, saying it will help lead to better and safer drivers. Peter Rodger, Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) chief, said: "This is a good step forward. All new drivers have to learn that multi tasking is an integral part of day-to-day driving."

The Driving Instructors Association (DIA) said the introduction of independent driving would also help ensure that candidates are fully ready when they present themselves for the test: "Introducing this new element means that driving instructors have the final say when a candidate is ready for test" said DIA group manager, Steve Garrod.

What the candidates say - Here's what some of the first candidates have been tweeting about the new test:

"It was better than the original test. The independent part of the test was my favourite part"
"I had to think about where I was going while controlling the car, but I got to ask where I was going"
"I think the change is a really good thing. People will benefit from it a lot"
